How Virtua Fighter is Making its Comeback

EVO posted a video of Seiji Aoki, Legacy Virtua Fighter Project producer, providing insight to the development and direction they are pushing with R.E.V.O. release for Steam. Some of the information is a repeat of what was revealed at the VF Direct, but there are some additional nuggets of information.

When we made the original game, we did not develop it with the intention of implementing rollback. And adding it into an already existing foundation was extremely challenging from a technical perspective. At the same time, we though there would be no point in releasing a PC version of the game without rollback. So, we've had to overcome many technical challenges and hurdles to get this far with the PC version. To top it all off, the source code is over 10 years old. Fitting new features into source code from over a decade ago is an extremely difficult task.

The last time Virtua Fighter 5 received a balance update was an update to the arcade version, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown - Revision 1. It was on the 24th of November 2011. Since then, it's been around 13 years and without a single balance update in between. As part of our preparation for New Virtua Fighter Project, we felt the need to reevaluate the Virtua Fighter franchise from the ground up, which is why we decided to rebalance the game one more time. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is a big step forward in this regard. This is another big reason why we really wanted to make the Steam version of the game.

To add to that, this is a 13 year old game, so...The first thing we had to was to create the same development environment. This proved to be very, very difficult. For a long time, it didn't really work out. Preparing the right environment for development was one thing, but calling back the original development team members from back then and getting them all situated took a very long time as well.
