@Jason Elbow because unlike regular throws, you haven't made a read, you just reacted to your opponent being at one side - this keeps side throws from being totally useless against people who are good at reacting to which side you're on
Getting hit by a side throw is like a punch in the groin. You should never let it happen so when you do, shame on you. When you break it, you're still dealing with someone trying to hit you in the nuts.
