    Re: Namco Sticks

I'm by no means a joystick expert, but I have a stick that nobody here has mentioned yet, and I thought I'd repost the comments I made in another thread here, and add a bit:

Of the American joysticks I tried (teardrop stick), the one that I liked the most was the Real Arcade Universal "Tournament Ready" by Pelican. Normally I abbhor Pelican products in a way reminiscent of certain scenes in the Christian Bible, mainly when God is trashing the planet.

However, this stick is actually quite good. It's got wooden construction and real arcade buttons and joystick. It's heavy, unlike most home joysticks, and it has plenty of space below the stick and buttons to rest my wrists. Sitting in a chair, I can raise my feet with a box and set it in my lap, and it's quite comfortable sitting there for long periods of time. The stick cost me $50, most of which I paid for by trading in a few games I didn't play anymore.

I'd like to add that the buttons and joystick are 'clicky' if you like that (and I do), and the buttons are in an arc, not straight, so it's quite comfortable. I mapped the first three on the bottom to be G, P, K and it's very comfortable playing. I don't even notice the other buttons.

It should be noted that this thing is HUGE. However, nothing I've played yet mimicks being in an arcade better than this stick. When I play, even when doing 270 motions, I never have to hold the stick down to play. It's so heavy it holds itself down, and I can play without worrying about positioning the thing.

I eventually plan to splurge on getting a Japanese-style stick, but for those on a budget, or those who need to be able to trade in games for some capital, I highly recommend this stick. Based on my experience with it, it's very sensitive and it works fantastically. Diagonals, multiple inputs ([P]+[K]+[G]), everything has been easy on this stick. I like it a lot.

I thought about getting the Pelican stick, in spite of the fact that I generally don't like having the laziest and dirtiest of birds as the mascot. But I thought about it.

Instead, I got an X-Arcade, and despite a lot of hardcore people telling me it's crap - I like it. It's got enough buttons so that I don't need multiple sticks for multiple games - it takes a beating, and I've dented walls with it, walking from room to room with it in a gym bag. It's stick and buttons are clicky...and I like that, though it makes you sound like a damn flea circus when you're in a game like MvC2. But I found that its weight and room on the deck of it are excellent. And since I'm not hardcore enough to notice a deadzone, I'm perfectly cool with it.

I came across a Chinese distributor for Sanwa parts. Their shipping is somewhat pricey to the US ($11). The sticks themselves are $11 each, the buttons $1.30. Good stuff.

I like the look of it, shame that they no longer have the original evo stick on playasia though
I think it looks good but I'm not sure how 8 buttons would work

    Re: Evo Sticks

I've played with this stick. It's basically the same as the VF Evo stick but the shaft is slightly longer and positioned a bit too far to the left for my (personal) comfort. Apart from those two minor gripes, it's a good all-purpose stick.

In terms of build quality they're very similar (perhaps the SCII stick is a little more robust). The SCII stick has the obvious advantage of being adaptable to most fighting games whereas the Evo stick has only three main face buttons.

It's a tight call but if I was able to choose again (I have a red Evo stick) I'd probably opt for a SCII stick due to its versitility and the fact it plays VF just as well as the Evo sticks.

Dude, you were lucky that day. Take Srider's word and never look back.

P.S. I am the master of Pelicans.

That page actually says the difference between the display model and the playable model of the stick is the buttons. Not sure which one had which.... most likely the playable used real sanwa parts, but the actual production model will use OEM parts. The interesting part would be the size and mount of the casing. It would be great if you can swap real parts into it easily.....

...or even better, if the OEM's felt no different than real Sanwa buttons.

I was wondering does anyone have THIS particular joystick? And if you do, what the hell are the top buttons for?

I have the Evo version of that. The top buttons are for: select, start, R1, R2, L1, L2, and triangle.
