$660 for VF5...

Ten wonderful years of Virtua Fighter, and it completely rules my life. Still, I don't think $660 is worth it...

-Wow. That realy says a lot about Sega's disposition, especialy the highlighted portion. They are actually willing to alienate their overseas fanbase, the fanbase that purchase over 70% of Vf console ports. That same 70% that let Sega know that their are people outside of Japan that care about their game, and willing to pay (sega)the $40 entry fee to play Vf.

-Limiting the use of how vf arcades are disributed through their leasing of technology puts the nail in the head. They acknowlege that Arcades are dead pretty much everywhere outside of Japan. They made it clear that they are only building vf only for the Japanese populus. This limit the amout of Vf exposure to those who live in Japan and to those who purchase the game on console. There is usually a time lapse of a year or two before home release...That is a Year + of everyone outside of Japan being out of the loope.

-I also hope that online accesability is present..Not necessarily online play, but the ability to send and post vids for all to watch. The ability for sega to send tweaks and update patches...scratch that. I doubt they are willing to create anything that will cater to those who do not live in Japan, or create an understanding between their loyal fans(outside of Japan), by showing them how appreciative they are by providing content that will help you the player enjoy their game even more.

I hope Sega ran the numbers in coming to this decision. Tekken 6 won't be coming to the 360 and so Sega would really have only DOA to compete with. Granted VF5 won't have online play but it feels like there should be a significant market opportunity on the 360 especially given the PS3's high price and well-supported library. I imagine not too many mainstream gamers will own both the 360 and the PS3.

I'm holding out on a glimmer of hope that Sega will change its mind of online play for console. After all, VF "sport" players who won't tolerate lag won't be playing on console, they're all in the arcades (which would also explain the quick console release); the two customer segments are really very different.

Even if VF5 won't have online play, Sega should at least take some of the VF.net features online. E.g. perhaps players can upload saved matches online.

I would be extremely surprised if Sega does not have an alternative payment/ownership plan for overseas sales. It would just be...dumb. Money left on the table at no additional fixed cost. The rental plan is designed to make it easier for arcade vendors, not harder, and I'm sure Sega will come up with the right price for overseas arcade vendors.

But then this is Sega we're talking about. Great games, questionable business decisions.

isnt that what we all do anyway; buy systems for VF. I mean some of us buy boards to make arcade versions at home, have figures, cards, etc (i just got a stuffed kage doll). My PS2 game collection is sooo limited , as im sure others are, but we all mainly only play VF.
We'll all unfortunately give in and buy one, not happily,, then in a month or two down the line, you feel better when your DLCing or somehting to your new buddies and your next complaint will be " why does nobody play this game"
hence, ill be posting " anyone in chicago play this"...

This VF5 home experience will be like anal sex,, (i've only gotten 2 fingers so i speak from experience) ,, it hurts at first, but then you ease into it with pleasure.

Not to be funny, but $600 isn't a great deal of money. Think about how much money most people will spend in pubs/club/bars on drinking themselves stupid. The amount money people spend on cigerettes, gambling and other pathetic vices that the majority of people have. $600 is 1 weeks wage, which is easily worth it for the console which will have all (or at least most) of the best games, and will support all your existing games as well

i say we gather all of the world's best western players, then enter the first VF5 tournament, beat down their scene, then go home.

The $500 SKU is almost as good as the $600...the other AV-port can prolly output up to 1080i anyway and without Wi-fi, you just connect your PSP or whatever manually...besides, not everyone will need all the different memory-types and think it's enough with USB-memory-cards and the harddrive. At least Sony went for SKUs that have the same lowest denominator instead of making it impossible to develop for the more expensive SKU because of features missing in the cheaper one.

And before you ask; no, I don't have any hard facts on this, but it makes sense

 

When I got the PS2, I got it for...
1. VF4
2. DVD
3. Other PS2 games

It'll be similar with the PS3:
1. VF5
2. Blu-Ray
3. Other PS3 games

$600 is steep, but it's not bad considering you're getting Blu-Ray in the mix. For those of you who have HDTVs and have seen the difference compared to standard NTSC TVs know that Blu-Ray will represent a significant jump for movie-watching. Think about how detailed your porn will be.

Also, why are we talking as if Sega is doing the raping? That's Sony bending you over my brothers.

 

Yeah the leap in picture quality will be big for those who have been rinsing composite all these years lol.
RGB has and still looks damn good to me but yeah vf5 hd should look even sweeter.

 

I just wish the reading speed on the B-Ray player (ps3) was better then 2x. Maybe we will see it go 4x in the near future.

i don't plan on getting the ps3 at launch date.

Seeing as how I live in Europe (Ireland), not only would Sony like to extract €500+ (~$625+) for the GIMPED PS3, I'm sure they'll ask me for another €65-70 for a single game. Add €100+ for 2 sticks if I buy & assemble the components myself, and round it off with a lovely couple of euro for cables so I can hook it up to my piss-poor TFT, and that's rape to the tune of €700. About 2 weeks decent pay, or (more realistically) 4-6 weeks savings... if I don't need money for anything else.

Mmmm... yeah. Not gonna happen anytime until late 2007 at best.

I think I'll be sticking to my VF4:Evo for now, thanks, and buy a Wii. Guess I'm just not "hardcore" enough for Sony. That's alright, I still got Rez to beat (400k on Area 5? Maybe...)

In addition to that, players will simply bitch about the lack of online compared to DOA4, so that = rental. America for the most part doesn't give a shit about Virtua Fighter anyway, so this doesn't shock me.

I understand them going with PS3, but hope VF5 is only "exclusive" in the same way that the GTA series was "exclusive" to the PS2.

Tekken 6, it's just bullshit hype, like what they showed last year.

Sony has spent the last year trying to steal MS's thunder with a lot of smoke and mirrors, with only one game that looks interesting at all: MGS4. Everyone knows all the stuff they showed last year was pre-rendered bullshit. Even Kojima made himself look like an ass by telling players watching the first MGS4 trailer to "Forget Pre-rendered Stuff", then showing the same pre-rendered footage of killzone later in the same trailer as evidence of how great the cell processor is. Now the system's almost ready for real, and what do they have to offer?

A bunch of sequels upon sequels for games that are arguably getting worse with each version (MGS, Devil May Cry, Ridge Racer, Onimusha, Gran Turismo etc, all games which in my opinion peaked at part one), and more sequels that may or may not be better next time (FF, Tekken etc).

Oh, and they've proceeded to steal the most interesting ideas from Nintendo and MS's systems for the PS3. This is how Sony operates. I'm surprised any VF fan would want the game on Sony's system. Sony was basically responsible for forcing Sega out of the hardware bussiness. In the time of VF2, people would have cried sacrelige at the idea of VF2 on the PS. Does anyone here know/remember that Sony very aggresively tried to stop the console release of PS2 Evo? The aftermath of that difficulty? No console FT kids. When the DC launched, we had VF, DOA and Soul Calibur on one system, at launch, with official Sega joysticks, and the system cost HALF what the PS3 will. You can get a 360 for half the price of the premium PS3.

If AM2 had some vision, and a little more ambition, they could have a version of VF.TV running on the 360 right now, in people's homes, in HD. Hyping the game, getting fans excited, and building more buzz. Then release the game on both systems, why not? Maybe because after trying to fuck Sega and VF fans everywhere with the Evo deal, Sony have now decided that they want VF5 on their system, and have paid a big chunk of $ to make it exclusive...?

I don't have any particular love for MS or Nintendo, I'm just tired of seeing a company that came into this bussiness, a company which DOES NOT MAKE VIDEO GAMES, rule the roost over companies that built this bussiness. And as consumers, we're as much to blame as anyone, me included. I think consumer apathy is really sucking the life out of the console industry, as great games fall by the wayside, and people buy more and more junk games that rely on established formulas.

It's the same apathy that keeps VF scenes outside of Japan from having the nicer things that Tekken and DOA fans enjoy. Apathy by us and by AM2. I think non Japanese VF fans have been getting the screw for so long, they've started to say it feels good. I remember when there were petitions to try to get VFnet-like features outside Japan, lead by myke. Now people are told to "stop complaining". If the non-Japanese VF community never takes a stand about what they want to see, in an organized way, it'll never change. One extremely motivated person could change things, that's how change occurs in the world: one person cares so much about an idea that other people start to care.

 

So, after your lynched for complaining about the situation, you want red roses or black ones at your funeral? At least in this community, there has been a culture of trying to stomp on people who complain about the scene, who at least have the motivation to try and change things. Now there are so many people clinging to VF like its some holy sacrement that anytime anybody voices a complaint/wish/desire they are stomped on by this community. You know for one that I stand with you as does Shang and probally a small handful of people.
I remember I almost wanted to scream when Sega pulled out of the hardware buisness and we were forced to play vf on the ps2. Ever since then, it has been a struggle to get vf console releases.
