    i've played a good few hundred online matches now and at a rough guess here's how i'd assign character frequency;

    1. Lei Fei
    2. Vanessa
    3. Pai
    4. Brad
    5. Eileen
    6. Lau
    7. Akira
    8. Kage
    9. Jacky
    10. Lion
    11. Sarah
    12. Goh
    13. Wolf
    14. Jeff
    15. Aoi

Lei Fei is without doubt the online abuser of choice due to difficulty evading during online play, in normal circumstances he can be dealt with fairly but not online.

    Damn.

    A felow scot.

I'm totally adding you to my friend list when I get online.

    Expect a request from L Balance L

As for your list, I rarely see Brad.

But, that being said, you've played far more games than me.

I'll make a list of everyone I play this week and their characters.

It will give a rough idea of how many people use who.

Could you be specific? How does online differ from "normal circumstances"?

I know this has been dealt with here and there, but sounds like you have something specific in mind.

Why is someone more difficult to evade online than they are in "normal circumstances". What do you mean by "fairly"

Someone told me that both players are at a similar frame rate disadvantage is that not true?

I'm a PS3er wondering whether I look forward to online play on the PS3, but if its the case that online play is very different from off line play, I won't look forward to that feature.

Latency is a major factor when playing online.

Especially in such an intricate fighting game as Virtua Fighter.

It can actually be hard to pull off a tech roll if the game is lagging.

So yes, it differs greatly from offline play.

My list would be more like:

    1. Lei Fei
    2. Pai
    3. Lion
    4. Eileen
    5. El Blaze
    6. Wolf
    7. Akira
    8. Kage
    9. Jacky
    10. Lau
    11. Jeffry
    12. Brad
    13. Vanessa
    14. Goh
    15. Sarah

what i'm saying is that lei fei produces allot of canned linear attack sequences that can be easily evaded offline. but in situations where there's lag evades become very hard to time properly even when you know the same sequence is coming...therefore lei fei becomes particularly annoying to deal with online.

i'm not claiming lei fei is too powerful or anything of that nature.

edit: hey seidon, i'll look out for you online. i think i've picked myself up after saturday's result enough to play some vf!

So then the VF veterans are going to have to come up with new VF techniques that will balance the online issues. So we're going to have to work out sequences and defensive techniques that are specifically designed for online play.

Guaranteed throws, safe attacks, etc then need to be looked at in the context of online, lag times etc.

The good thing is VF has enough sophistication to design new offenses and defenses specifically for online play.

But I'm kind of stuck with all of this until VF for PS3 goes online.

I mostly agree with the listings, I love playing against Lei-Feis online - nobody seems to know how to break from vane's OS takedown. They must have picked up the game, cruised through quest mode in tekken mode (practicing 3-4 floats) or something, cause i 've not had a single thrown broken yet. Also they don't duck! The game are all to easy to win, seriously, OS /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+ /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif 14 frame elbow slam down, oki, then /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif as they rise, elbow slam oki repeat win. If they somehow manage to avoid it (remember they don't duck and they always rise with an attack) sidestep lancer, hit them from mount with 3 /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif then repeat /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. I love you guys /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I like to play fellow vanessas too - i wait for the inveitable /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif duck it then DS /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif for half their lifebars. Apparently other people still eat that. It's a pity that online you can't see offline comments - my "duck k+g, break f+p+g" sig might have given them the hint that other vanessa players won't fall for that.

I've also seen a lot Blazes online, punch happy buggers. I've seen a lot less Shuns than most people apparently, and quite more Laus than expected. I've played ONE wolf up until now IIRC and he totally destroyed me with the same techniques i use on noobs - well timed oki.

All in all, as far as "techniques VF veterans will come up with" i think oki is the key to playing online, not /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif whoring, ffs.

I am coming in late but I agree with this guy. Sega screwed the pooch so far with this one. The hard core VF crowd has already bought the PS3 version, and are pissed (I, too, fit in that crowd) and are waiting for some sort of fix, patch, new version, or downloadable content that will allow VF5 to be played online on their PS3. The VF base consists on nothing but hardcore members most of whom would have already bought the PS3 version so the 360 version was doomed to low, or at least, slow sales.

I suspect the Sega are hesitant to allow online play on PS3 via any fix because they are afraid that it will find its way into Japan and cannibalize their arcade scene. They probably figured that the 360 sells so poorly in Japan that online play via 360 would not be a serious threat.

I never really thought of seriously making techniques just for online play because the lag does make it near impossible to do some techniques 100% of the time like offline which can lead to death. When I bust out vane online I get a bucket load of easy wins and I don't even play with the girl I just know what she does because I've had to deal with her for sooo long. Though now assuming that oki is stronger on live that makes sense since she has a very strong oki game. I do better with her online than I actually do with my main eileen which just never really made sense to me. I play herkdawgIII online and offline and my record is much better off, go figure. Maybe I have to be able to stare into the soul of my opponent to play effectively.

VF will never be a premier fighting game for the U.S. market unless it gets backing from SOA or MS. If major television coverage was given be it BETTER tv commercials, TV Tournament play, and guide books then the scene will grow. But this is a risk that Sega would never take and MS well thats up in the air.

I think the majority of "hardcore" VFers have gotten the 360 version.

Side note from what I hear Japanese VF players are quite interested in the online experience on the 360 so we will see how that turns out in December

Truth be told... You're quicker than I am smooth /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

But really.,. it took years for arcade sucessful arcade fighting styles to crystalize and become solid. It will take similar time for online fighting techniques to reach high skill levels. Since VF is just now coming online the bar has been officially raised for all the other fighters, but to take online fighting to the same skill levels as off line fighting we will have to develop new offensive and defensive approaches. (kind-a-like) mastering martial arts for bad weather fighting.

we'll just have to come out of another bag when we're online. It
a similar deal to when normally doing hand-to-hand sparring and then having to adapt to weapons-based sparring

Online skills will have to be developed.. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
