I feel that even long-time fans can want a story mode. Just not most. Of course Virtua Fighter doesn't need a story mode, but does seem like it should be a natural progression. Giving the characters stories that build from the basic personality we nonetheless cherish and take them in a path that seems natural for each could only enhance the experience of a Virtua Fighter game. For anyone uninterested in a story, it wouldn't be much to play the other modes, without a concern to the story (though I'm sure anyone would be somewhat curious). I doubt the developers would really force the mode upon us - rather, creating more options, more than likely to give the series appeal to people who may have previously been disinterested. Personally, I'd be quite excited about a story mode and very curious about what form it'd take. But that's just me.

I remember seeing one for War Gods or some shit and a Mortal Kombat game for the gamecube.

These days you never see that. Back when fighting games were in their heyday it was commonplace. When Street Fighter 2 came out in the arcades, EGM did a complete 20 page spread with the entire moveset for every character, I mean ever Jab , strong and fierce move and a pic for each. Plus the layout featured a lot of exclusive Capcom art. I dont remember if EGM's MK2 layout was that extensive , but it did at least feature every fatality . Unless you were very computer savy and were on the bulletin boards(this was pre internet), people relied on gaming magazines to get arcade info.

Yeah I've seen them long before even for some of the early 3d fighters where movelists were much larger.

Arcadia is really nice because it's so specialized unlike most English game magazines. Last year Arcadia ran monthly lists of all of the VF5R move sets (a few characters a month). They had the sets listed out exactly like the commands lists at the top of VFDC complete with frame data.
